Critic Reviews
100 points, Wine News
"100 points.  Lightly burnished yellow-gold hue with a halo-like mousse.  Lovely aged aromas of citrus, mineral and brioche.  Citrus flavors of grapefruit and lemon peel laced with char and chalk. Lively, youthful finish embodies a perfectly dry, acidic brut style.  With every release, this quintessential Blanc de Blancs sets the standard for chardonnay-based Champagne."

97 points, Decanter
“Mild temperatures and extreme cold alternated throughout both winter and spring. A hot and dry summer led to a harvest that commenced on 22 September. Citrussy fruit, including pomelo and lemon, as well as spices and floral scents, suffuse the nose. Rich and dense mouthfeel on the attack giving way to a precise, crystalline texture. Purity, elegance and freshness characterise this magnificent Champagne now at full maturity.”

"96 points.  Cellar Selection!  The fabled Salon's latest release is much riper and softer than the great steely 1996 vintage.  This suggests it is likely to drink soon.  In the meantime, the acidity is supremely fresh, with grapefruit edges and green apple flavors.  And then there is minerality and a tight, structured aftertaste as a reminder that this great Champagne is always going to be more than its fruit."

95 points, Burghound
"95 points.  An elegant and very fresh but distinctly yeasty nose of stupendous breadth leads to incredibly intense, pure, detailed and vibrant flavors that possess superb depth and simply knockout length.  This is a powerful Salon and even though it doesn't have the solid acid spine of the very best vintages, this compensates by its approachability and terrific mouth feel."

“From a recently released bottle disgorged in 2018, the 1997 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut is showing very well indeed, offering up aromas of citrus oil, crushed chalk, white flowers, warm bread and iodine that are appreciably more youthful than the more mature dried fruit tones that readers will find in bottles of the original disgorgement. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tensile and incisive, with superb concentration, chalky structure and a long, searingly mineral finish. The 2018 disgorgement saw 3.5 grams per liter dosage, somewhat less than the original release. While the 1996 has the edge, I doubt that, 20 years ago, anyone could have imagined how close the 1997 and 1996 would be as they approach maturity.”

“The Salon 1997 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut opens with a deep, intense and concentrated yet pure, fine and complex bouquet of chalk intertwined with ripe yellow-fleshed fruit, brioche and hazelnut notes. This is a bright, perfectly matured Champagne from Mesnil-sur-Oger with hints of caramel, white mushrooms, parsley root and a beautiful varnish on the nevertheless fresh nose with its characteristic chalky Mesnil expressions. The palate is full and intense, almost rich in the first moment compared the the 2007, but then the 1997 proceeds as pure, elegant and fresh as a Salon should be.”

"95 points.  The 1997 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil possesses striking detail and depth in a surprisingly generous style for this wine.  An inner core of perfumed varietal fruit emerges from the glass, along with expressive aromas of smoke, minerals, mint, flowers and licorice, all of which are woven together with extraordinary elegance.  The finish is long , sweet and sublime.  Everything about this wine speaks to elegance, but in 1997 Salon is also a pleasure to drink young."

"95 points.  Salon's 1997 Brut Blanc de Blancs is drop-dead gorgeous.  There is a beautiful tension between the intense minerality of Mesnil and the warmth of the vintage.  Textural depth, brilliance and expressive inner perfume are the hallmarks of this gorgeous Blanc de Blancs.  Flowers, mint and crisp varietal fruit linger on the impeccable finish.  This is a particularly youthful, vibrant disgorgement of the 1997 that can be enjoyed now or cellared.  Disgorged First Trimester, 2010 Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027."

"95 points.  100 Best Wines of 2010  The radiant green-gold color of this wine matches the golden yellow and white peach savor of its fruit.  As is typical of the Salon style, this is youthful on release, with acidity that tightens around its bold flavors and restricts the expansion of the layers of those flavors.  In balance, complexity and minerality as well as persistence on the palate."

93 points, Wine Spectator
"93 points.  A mix of freshness and maturity, this bubbly offers lemon, toasted brioche and ginger flavors, with a hint of coffee.  Builds in the palate, with a mineral note underneath.  Sleek and finely textured, almost creamy even, with a crisp, mouthwatering finish."

91 points, Wine Spectator
"91 points.  A delicate Champagne, with hints of honey and smoke winding through the apple pastry, orange peel and toast flavors.  This is well-integrated, but the lively acidity still has the edge on the graphite-laced finish.  Drink now through 2018"

points, The Wall Street Journal
"Salon is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest wines.  Made from 40-year-old vines, it is a study in perfection.  A first sip reveals the extraordinary power and depth of this Champagne, sourced from Salon's grand cru vineyard in the heart of the Cote des Blancs.  The 1997 has notes of broiche and green apple, with an incredible length and flavor.  Simply stunning."

About The Winery
Salon is a unique Champagne. All the emphasis in the production of this exceptional wine is on the singular. It was originally the product of one single man, Aimé Salon; from one single region, the Côte de Blancs; from one single cru, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; from one single grape variety, Chardonnay; and from one single vintage, with no blending whatsoever. Created in 1911 with its first vintage in 1905, Champagne Salon is the creation of Aimé Salon, a champagne connoisseur enchanted then seduced by the terroir of Le Mesnil. Headed by Salon until his death in 1943, the house was then left to his nephew. In 1988, Champagne Laurent-Perrier, a family-owned company, became the majority shareholder of Champagne Salon. Today, the house of Salon, along with its ancient neighbor and sister, Champagne Delamotte (the 5th oldest Champagne house, founded in 1760) are directed by one man, Didier Depond. At each step of the production of Salon, a conscientious effort is made to be the best, the most beautiful and the rarest, thus allowing fervent admirers of Salon to taste a perfectly balanced Champagne, with rich and complex aromas.
