About the Wine
Critic Reviews
94 points, Tim Atkin MW
“Released for the first time as a Swartland Syrah, with fruit taken from the Goldmine and Porseleinberg vineyards, this sees 10% whole bunches and is a remarkable wine: plush and rich, with notes of roasted meat, lavender and incense, dense colour tannins and a twist of pepper spice."

“Black currant, licorice root, cedar and whole tobacco leaf form the nose of this dark, suave red. The palate is smooth and seductive in feel, with structured yet plush and pillowy tannins that, combined with the ripe black fruit and black berry flavors, lend a textural impression like crushed velvet. The finish is all black fruit and sweet, earthy spice, like cedar plank-grilled black plums and charred fennel bulb.”

“This wine is currently quite big and bold. The bouquet opens with robust, abundant dark plum, cherry, boysenberry and blackberry fruit scents that are hit by notes of fresh soil, roasted cocoa nib and cigar box spice. It opens up to reveal more nuance—graphite, sweet tobacco—with time. The dark fruits and medium plus tannins create a bold, gripping structure that fills the mouth and finishes long. It has the stuffing to age well, so drink 2022–2026.”

91 points, Decanter
“Complex and aromatic yet subtle, with an inviting minty brightness on the nose leading to a fine-boned, sleek palate boasting garrigue spice, rewarding acidity and a long, savoury finish.”

90 points, Wine Spectator
“A fresh, elegant style, with a racy edge to the mix of cherry and red currant fruit, laced with a bright savory note and underscored by a flash of iron through the finish. Drink now through 2021.”

About The Winery
Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, the farm's name means 'ravine of the Boekenhout' (pronounced Bookn-Howed). The Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting program was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier. Today, Marc Kent is the owner, chief winemaker, and driving force behind the dynamic farm.
